January 2015

Greetings, Rocker fans!  And welcome to Lynns Hangouts’ newsletter!  Thank you all for signing up so you can get a jump on exciting news!

Band News:

The start of the New Year brings excitement in the live music community!  There are some great things brewing for some of the bands, as well as LH!  Details to follow as soon as we can let them out!

Radio Heavy is back up and running!  Gary Tarplee has taken over the lead guitar duties.  Gary is also in Maiden California with Radio Heavy’s bassist, Zane Miller!  Bryan Fields can now be spotted on the drums!  Bryan is also the percussionist for Red Radio.  We have yet to see the new team in action, but we look forward to that time!

One of our good friends and an awesome team member of Playback The Hits, Jerry Brehm, moved back to New York.  We will miss him terribly, but definitely wish him the best!  No word yet on who will replace Jerry as lead guitarist.

Meeting Minutes:

New sponsor coming soon to LH – Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights!  Just a few more details to work out, then you will see their sponsorship ad up on LH!  Please come check out this very fun and personable sports venue!  And while you’re there checking out the multitude of TV’s airing various sporting events, say hi to the owners – Ken and Nickole!

I am excited to report our January website stats were stellar!  As of the end of January we saw a cumulative total of over 31,000 visitors, 265,000 page views, and a cumulative total of over 59,000 video views on You Tube, independent of LH!  And for those IT geeks, our bounce rate was 4.37% for the month.  Keep visiting LH often for more fun, and to be part of these awesome stats!

If you want to come party with us, look for the “Join LH” on the Home page gig schedule next to the events we will be hanging out at, and come join us!  We’d love to see you out supporting live music and we will grab a dance with you!

If you go to a gig you saw on LH, please don’t be shy about telling the band!  I’m sure they would love to meet you as well as learn how you heard of their gig!

LH donations are picking up!  We are so grateful and thankful for every one of you who has made a donation!  Your contribution gives us encouragement and makes it possible to keep up the fast pace checking out the local live music scene here in the Sacramento area.  Thank you for supporting LH as we support this awesome group of talented folks!

Let’s check out some of January’s live music fun around Sacramento:

1/2/15:  The party invite said Corner Pocket with Riff Raff – how could anyone pass that up!  And hardly anyone did, as the place was hopping with AC/DC fans needing their fix of AC/DC style love songs!  The band made sure everyone was having a great time, and even brought up Dave Converse of ACA/DACA to jam for a song!  I posted Margaritaville under Recent Hangouts to show how lead vocalist Mike Barnes mixes up the words to present a very fun rendition of the song!  It was a great night!

1/3/15:  A few months ago, the last time we saw Jet Screamer at Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale, I had promised Jet Screamer I would come support them again on this date.  I cannot believe how fast it came around!  We saw so many friends show up to support and have fun, including numerous musicians!  That list includes John Butterfield, Jerry Pompei, Larry Audino, Chandra Laccoarce and Miles French!  Can you guess what bands they are with?  (Answer = Four Barrel, Two20, Category 4, A-Train, The Mock Ups!)  I got a very cool interview with bassist Paul Wright who is going to be a first-time dad in 2015!  Don’t miss his cute story how he got a leather jacket for his baby!  It was a super fun evening, lots of smiles and laughs!  Life is good!

1/9/15:  It was time for some monkey business at Strikes Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin – the Tone Monkeys, that is!  We walked in, chatted with the team for a bit and settled in.  It wasn’t long before the festivities started!  There were so many birthday celebrations this evening, there were too many to count!  The birthday folks did get a chance to get up on stage with the Monkeys for a birthday song!  I filmed keyboardist Bill Glaholt getting into character of Devil Went Down To Georgia as he played the fiddle on the keys!  It made for an awesome Random Riff to air in March!  I was honored to grab an interview with good friend Shelley Magee, who takes tons of pictures at live music events to post on Facebook!  Don’t miss the interview on 2/25/15!  I chatted with the restaurant manager of Halftime and found out some really fascinating things about him!  Needless to say, I will be interviewing him soon so you can hear some of these cool stories!  Lots of fans, lots of fun, lots of monkeying around!  Another great night!

1/16/15:  Since there were very few LH bands gigging this particular evening, we arranged a GNO (girl’s night out) and decided to get a taste of the happenings in the country world!  After careful deliberation, Flat Busted at Country Club Saloon in Loomis was the band and venue of choice!  Good friend Teri Alison (Unlicensed Therapy) knew the band and promptly introduced us upon arrival!  We found the team to be super friendly and sweet! And boy can they do country!  Lead vocalist Brian McPherson has a killer voice – very impressive!  Percussionist Jeff Nielsen and bassist Gary Canas have some pretty darn good voices as well!  And lead guitarist Jerry Wolfe could lay down a guitar lick with his eyes closed!  The place was hopping with lots of friendly folks ready for a night of fun!  I met the General Manager, Mark Storm, who is so kind and friendly!  Needless to say, our country GNO was a success!

1/17/15:  Double rock night!  It’s been awhile since we entered the fast lane, so tonight’s the night!  First stop:  Strikes Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin with Playback The Hits!  Playback had the honor of being on Good Day Sacramento last Sunday so this was a special party for them!  The band was spot on with their tunes, with Gordon Groft occasionally adding the Harmonica, and Randy Kiesz leading the beat behind the kit!  I got a super Drum Off video of La Grange.  Excellent way to start off double rock!

After the first set we headed over to Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights for more fun with Category 4!  The dance floor was packed when we arrived as everyone was enjoying the fun!  I got a Drum Off of Mark Coudriet and a Recent Hangouts video of Mark singing Kiss, which the fans had a lot of fun with!  I spoke with owner Ken Fiola and his son and it sounds like they have their graphic ready for LH!  We are looking forward to getting them on board as a sponsor, and we are almost there!  Check off this night on the FUN side of the list!

1/23/15:  We started early this Friday evening at The Trocadero in Roseville with Legal Addiction!  What’s so great about this timeslot is it naturally allows us to do double rock!  Legal Addiction pulled out The Hat Trick – they put all the songs they have ever done into a hat so the fans could pick the next songs!  I was asked to draw the first song, and came up with Guitars, Cadillac’s.  Some of the songs the team hadn’t played in a long time, so it was a fun challenge for them to conquer!  During one fun song, the bass player’s wife, daughter and mother all hit the dance floor, and I couldn’t resist capturing this awesome three-generation dance in a Fan File!

We left shortly after 8 PM to head to Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale for some fun with Red Radio for the rest of the night!  We had a blast dancing and partying with these special friends of ours!  The new percussionist and bass player are becoming a comfortable part of the team and the songs are getting tight!  Special treat – lead vocalist Tracy Butler’s voice coach, Sana Christian, was in the house and agreed to sing Brass In Pocket with the team!  Check out that Random Riff to air in March!  We had an excellent time at both venues with both bands!  Time well spent!

1/24/15:  It’s not often we make it out to The Couch in Citrus Heights, but grabbed the chance to check out Four Barrel during the evening hours with this gig!  This was our first time seeing the band with bassist John Butterfield, not counting his audition at Laugh’s Unlimited in November!  We were impressed with how well John fit in with the team and how polished they all were with a new member!  Didn’t miss a beat, in our book!  At one point, lead guitarist Phillip Lovejoy hopped up on one of the tables to show how Eruption is done!  You are such a rebel, Phil!  We had so much fun we stayed until 1:15!

1/30/15:  This weekend holds four bands in two nights!  Tonight, we were off to the Corner Pocket in Citrus Heights for a special event!  Playback The Hits’ lead guitarist, Jerry Brehm, is leaving California to head to his home state, New York!  This was their last gig together, so we could not miss it.   Jerry is also in Tres Hombres.  Both bands were rockin’ the Corner on this fine evening!  We had a great time and the music was a small slice of heaven, but it was bittersweet knowing we won’t see Jerry playing in these bands again.  Lots of well-wishers showed up to support Jerry and the bands.  A side note:  As Jerry traveled to New York, he posted on Facebook a picture of him standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona!  Jerry is such a rocker at heart!

1/31/15:   A very special night was in store tonight!  We were off to Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub in Sacramento for two bands.  First up – Super Huey, The Ultimate Huey Lewis Experience.  We always enjoy their performances, which include audience participation!  Harlow’s was set up with small tables on the dance floor for this early band and was open to any age.  Super Huey could not have done any better!  Great job, great sound, great atmosphere!  Very enjoyable!

Harlow’s then moves the tables off the dance floor to get ready for Hip Service, which was their main event for the evening.  This was LH’s first time partying with Hip Service and what a treat it was!  The dance floor was packed and everyone was digging the pop tunes from the band.  I counted 14 team members who move on and off the stage depending on the songs.  Our good friend Angie Cardena, of Angie Cardena Photography, was there taking some professional pictures for the band.  Always good to see her!  All in all, the night was quite a fun experience!  And a special shout out to Nellie Bloom of Hip Entertainment for allowing us to experience this super fun night – thank you Nellie!

January is a long, usually cold and wet month.  We were thankful we had live music to break it up and get us through!  Looking forward to the “red” month – February!  There are some fun things in store surrounding the “Love” Holiday!

Till then, ROCK ON!  \m/
