Greetings, Rocker fans! And welcome to Lynns Hangouts’ newsletter! Thank you all for signing up so you can get a jump on exciting news!
LH migrated to a faster new server on 6/15/14! This was a huge accomplishment for us simply because there has been so much traffic to the site it was slowing things down! Great problem to have! You should now see faster page loading and maneuvering around the website!
More great news, something we have all been waiting to hear – Sammy’s Island Bar & Grill is set to reopen in Downtown Roseville on September 16th!! I will keep you posted on the live music schedule as more details become available!
Cherry Bomb, our John Mellencamp Tribute band, is coming back on line! According to their Facebook page, they will have a show or two by summer’s end! Stay tuned…more to follow!
There’s a new sponsor coming soon to LH – Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights! Please come check out this very fun and personable venue! And while you’re there, say hi to the owners – Ken and Nickole!
I am excited to report July’s website stats rocked! As of the end of July we saw a cumulative total of almost 23,000 visitors and almost 237,000 page views! Our growth is healthy and on track for our 2014 goals! Keep visiting LH often for more fun, and be part of these awesome stats!
If you want to come party with us, check the Twitter feed on LH for details of where we will be hanging out and come join us! We’d love to see you out supporting live music!
Check out our ‘Categories’ feature on the right-hand side of the website so you can see all the fun videos posted from the beginning of LH!
I also want to take this moment to thank everyone who has made a donation to LH! Your contribution is greatly appreciated and gives encouragement to keep up the fast pace! The local live music scene here in the Sacramento area is constantly evolving, and we strive to keep you updated on the local talent! Thank you again for supporting LH as we support this awesome group of talented folks!
Let’s take a trip back in July to see what rocked Sacramento’s world:
7/4/14: Our Nation’s Birthday has arrived! And what better way to enjoy and celebrate than with Four Barrel at Swabbies On The River! Four Barrel was primed for this gig – I don’t think we’ve ever seen them perform better! Don’t miss the Random Riff of Kally Pile rockin’ the medley with amazing energy that aired on 7/30/14! Our good friends Al and Linda, who are getting married next year with Four Barrel’s help, wanted me to capture some footage of them with the band so I could cut a picture for their wedding invitations! How cool is that!! We saw so much red, white and blue today, it was truly an honor to spend the day surrounded by people who love this great country!
7/5/14: A beautiful day was in store for us today as we ventured back out to Swabbies On The River to support Playback and Riff Raff! First up – Playback, who were on top of their game today! Lead guitarist and good friend Jerry Brehm gave me a cool green Playback shirt to wear for them, which was a great conversation starter with some folks I had not met before! I got a great Drum Off video of Randy Keisz which aired on 8/13/14. I posted ‘Rebel Yell’ on LH under the Recent Hangouts section, and it was the most looked at video for two weeks straight! Playback was as tight a band as I have ever seen them!
Next up was Riff Raff. The team had been enjoying the fine tunes of Playback in their own fun ways, for example Riff Raff’s bassist, Tony Peterson, was on the dance floor with us most of the time; so they were ready to rock when their turn came! The fans were chompin’ at the bits as well, and a celebrity of sorts was spotted in the crowd – meteorologist Dave Bender, who saw Riff Raff at a short gig earlier in the month. Those few songs turned him and his friends into believers who wanted to see more! So we invited them to our front row table to enjoy the show! A very sweet woman was celebrating her 80th Birthday at Swabbies today with these fine bands (talk about a lady after my own heart!!) and Riff Raff made a nice announcement about it, which will air under the ‘Tickles, Tidbits & Trivia’ section in the future! And Riff Raff wouldn’t be Riff Raff without Dave Chapman venturing out into the crowd for some fan fun during ‘Rosie’ which aired under Fan Files on 7/30/14. Excellent day of adventure and fun!
7/11/14: When we supported Stone Kold during the Music Festival at Laugh’s Unlimited in Old Sacramento, it whet our appetite for more of this sweet band, and today our chance came at Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale! Upon arrival, we met lead vocalist Kathy Terry in the parking lot and proceeded to catch up. We found out they have a new percussionist, Ben Trapp, who turned out to really rock! Check out Ben’s beautiful white drum set next time you see the band! The crowd at Jan’s was super fun and enjoyed the night as much as we did! There were quite a few familiar faces to LH, including the percussionists of Four Barrel and Cats Barking, Scott Uhlenbrock and Lance Richard, respectively; and lead vocalist of Lady And The Tramps, Trish Mahony! I secured a super interview with Kathy regarding the tambourine incident that happened last year at the State Fair, which posted (along with the tambourine Blooper) on 8/6/14. Stone Kold invited me to take video of them at the California State Fair this year, to which I quickly accepted!
7/12/14: I think it had been last summer since we’ve been to The Fountains in Roseville. Tonight was time to check out The Mock Ups at this early evening, outdoor concert-type venue! I was so proud of the band as they entertained the huge crowd with their songs and humor! Some of the crowd was itching to dance to these cool 60’s and 70’s songs, as The Fountains opens up a dance area at 8:30, so you know where I could be found! It was a great gig for The Mock Ups, I believe they made a lot of new friends and fans! And I made a new friend – their sound man for the evening, Steve Skidgel, who is not only a sound man, but a guitarist and a delightful person!
Since The Fountains is an early gig, it allows those rockers who still feel the need to rock a chance to head out for more live music, and our pick was Strikes Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin with Auto Replay! It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Auto Replay and we happened upon a night when the band was sponsoring a black lite glo party! They had black lights over the dance floor and on stage, and were giving out glo sticks to all the fans! What a cool effect it had on the videos and pictures I took! Some fans went so far as to wear neon colors, which showed off nicely under the black lights. Two members of the Riff Raff team (Kevin Drummer and Tony Peterson) showed up to enjoy the fun! I got a cool Drum Off of Patrick O’Brien, which aired on 8/20/14. Patrick is a very powerful percussionist, and you’ll want to see this video! Tonight was fun, fun, fun!
7/13/14: It’s Swabbies-On-The-River Sunday! We don’t often do this combo, but we couldn’t resist the fact Rockin’ Down The Hiway and Blue Collar Men were performing! The weather was 108 degrees in Sacramento, so about 103 at Swabbies. Mighty hot day, Mates! The heat made the instruments wilt and the guitars were in constant need of tuning, but both bands did an exceptional job of entertaining the crowd of boaters, bikers and music lovers! I got a great Drum Off video of Robert Mills, percussionist for Rockin’ Down The Hiway, and that’s when I learned how hot it was under the stage overhang! Hats off to all these fine musicians who opted to give everything they had on such a hot, but very fun day!
7/18/14: A-Train, one of our more popular bands, had taken a month off, but was back in the saddle again tonight at Strike Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin. Word on the street was the dress attire to be red and black, so we darned our best set of color-coordinated tennis shoes and took off to the event! It was great to see them all again, and the team was primed and ready for action! Some close dance friends of LH showed up who had never seen A-Train before and remarked how good they were. A-Train fans were made this evening! I pre-arranged an interview with bassist, Barry Del Carlo, and found Barry to be intelligent, charismatic and comfortable in front of a camera. Did you know Barry is the voice of the California State Fair? Check out the interview posted on 8/20/14 to see just what that means! While there wasn’t a huge crowd at Strikes this evening (Joan Jett was playing, ironically, at the State Fair) the fans that were there stayed until the end and weren’t afraid of the dance floor!
7/19/14: Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights has turned into one of our favorite newer places to hang out and rumor was Red Radio was rockin’ the house! We took the opportunity to see our good friends and owners Nickole and Ken and to catch up on what’s new with the place! They have some great plans for continued makeover – and have already installed numerous TV’s to give all the sports fans reason to hang out here! Red Radio was showing off their updated set list with some rockin’ favorites and classic rock N’ roll! Many on the dance floor were generous with their compliments of the band, and LH was proud of their time in the spotlight! Mike Crouch was the substitute percussionist tonight and it was great to meet him in person! Check out his Drum Off video to air on 9/3/14 – it’s a sure “hitter!” (Couldn’t resist!) Teri Alison (Unlicensed Therapy) was in the crowd and on the dance floor for a bit – always great to see her, and some loyal LH fans showed up to party down (hi Keri, hi Ginny!) Guitarist Roberto Reyes and I decided to play a joke on the band shortly after midnight when Roberto put down his guitar and announced he was leaving as he didn’t feel well. Of course the camera was rolling and the look on bassist Jeff Grenz and lead vocalist Tracy Butler’s faces was priceless! I don’t think they fully caught on to the joke until after the camera stopped rolling and they were a few measures into the next song when Tracy middle-finger saluted Roberto! It was a great night!
7/21/14: As previously mentioned, Stone Kold was generous enough to invite LH to the California State Fair to help enjoy their time on the Promanade (Groupon) Stage, and of course I couldn’t resist bringing my camera! After all, that’s where I caught the best blooper EVER at last year’s Fair gig! Lead vocalist Kathy Terry was tearing up the stage with some awesome vocals that made folks sit up and take notice! On break, Kathy introduced me to some of their family that attended – it was a very special moment for me to be brought into their family! One for the memory book!
7/25/14: Tickets were purchased for the Steve Miller/Journey concert back in December 2013 – and the day is finally here! Both bands put on a great show, Journey had more spit shine and polish to their gig since we saw them a few years back! Very well done, a great time was had by all! And judging by the traffic both coming and going, half of Sacramento went! George, one of LH’s favorite fans that we see often at Swabbies, et al, actually flew over the concert in an Ultralite! He told me when he lowered the American Flag he got rope burns! Steve Miller drew the crowd’s attention to him and called him “bad …” pardon my French! Amazing night all the way around!
7/26/14: We knew a party was brewing at Strikes Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin as Apple Z was due to set up shop! We walked in and saw the cool Apple Z emblem on the two large screens behind the band and knew they meant business! I had a great chat with lead vocalist Scott Rodell before the show, then we all proceeded to party down! The crowd grew with time, no doubt due to the 100+ degree weather the day produced, and everyone was in it for the night! The band handed out so much fun there were smiles everywhere you turned! One song allowed percussionist Bradley Jon Sanders a very cool impromptu drum solo, which I grabbed my camera and recorded! Lots of LH friends were there, and it’s always so much fun to party with this group of live music lovers! (Hi Nancy, Sandy, Lori, Jeff, et al!)
7/27/14: Calling all live music fans, it’s Four-Barrel Sunday at Laugh’s Unlimited in Old Sacramento! It was so cool to walk in and see both Kally Pile and Phillip Lovejoy wearing our flag’s beautiful colors! The band was spot on with their songs and mixed up the set list to keep us hopping. The crowd thickened as the day moved west, which meant more energy, fun and dancers! Laugh’s owner, Skip Cappawana, was offered a chance behind the mic and gladly took the helm for Johnny B Goode! A good friend of mine, Tracy Butler – lead vocalist for Red Radio, was enjoying the day with us, and Phillip offered her a chance behind the mic with Heartbreaker! It was like a family get-together with all the familiar faces that showed up to support this awesome band! We always have the best of times with the Laugh’s Unlimited crowd and staff when live music graces their airwaves!
Seems July came and went so fast. Time really does fly when you’re having a good time! August will continue with the outdoor music, concerts in parks, and festivals. We have met so many new live music fans this month and have seen them out and about enjoying the talent! Please continue to make plans to free up some time and join us in supporting our local musicians!
Till then, ROCK ON! \m/
