Greetings, Rocker fans! And welcome to Lynns Hangouts’ newsletter! Thank you all for signing up so you can get a jump on exciting news!
Blackout Betty has joined the LH lineup as our 55th band! This band produces great music, and engages the fans in many fun ways! Don’t miss the details below!
Vocalist Carlos Benefield has left Take Out.
On The Fly has added Dante Mutti as their guitarist! You might remember Dante from The Tone Monkeys. Dante replaces John Goodwin, who will be missed. John is off to pursue another project. We look forward to supporting Dante at On The Fly’s gigs!
Andy Gomez, guitarist for Superlicious, has also joined Moonshine Crazy! This band holds a special country spot in the LH heart because of the interview with Mark Coudriet at Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale quite some time back. That was when Mark first told us about his vision for Moonshine Crazy. Shortly after, I was given the honor of taping their promo video!
Steve Marshall, percussionist for The Mach 5, has also joined Riff Raff! We have always admired Steve’s percussion abilities in The Mach 5, and we know he will bring his rock-N-roll flavor to Riff Raff as well!
This sad news hit us hard. Mitch Putnam, one off the owners of Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale, passed away on March 21st. I have had the honor of working with Mitch through Facebook on various aspects of band matters over the years, and found Mitch to be an engaged and positive supporter of local live music. He will be terribly missed. There will be a Celebration of Life close to Mitch’s birthday, on April 22nd at Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale.
March was a great month for our stats! By the close of month we had a cumulative total of almost 69,000 unique visitors to the website, and almost 401,500 page views. You Tube views were almost 122,000. New visitor sessions fell to 45%, but still a great stat that continues to bring new fans to the live music scene! Keep visiting LH often for more fun, and be part of these awesome stats!
We are so very grateful and thankful for every one of you who has made a donation to LH; whether direct, or through PayPal on the website! Your contribution gives us encouragement and makes it possible to keep up the fast pace checking out the local live music scene here in the Sacramento area. Thank you so much for supporting LH as we support this awesome group of talented musicians! You are in our thoughts every day!
You are always welcome to come party with the LH team! Just check for the “Join LH” on the Home page gig schedule next to the events we will be hanging out at! We’d love to see you out supporting live music and become part of the group we hang out with!
If you go to a gig you saw on LH, please don’t be shy about telling the band! I’m sure they would love to meet you as well as learn how you heard of their gig!
I want to take a moment to thank all the cool peeps who hang with me at these venues – soaking up the fun, bonding with the bands, and touching my heart! You all ROCK big time in my book!!!
Here’s what happened in the LH world of live music for the month of March:
3/3/17: Blackout Betty’s lead, Tom Hoy, and good friend Michelle Cagle, have both been after me to come see this band. Our curiosity was growing, so when they played at Halftime Bar & Grill in Strikes, Rocklin this early March evening, we knew it was time. The team is based out of Chico but are coming on strong in the Sacramento area with gigs like Halftime, Opera House Saloon, and Pistol Pete’s; with more locations in the works. We gave the band our full attention and stayed the entire evening. We found them to be great fun with their awesome metal rock set list, professional musicianship, and fan interaction. There weren’t many songs where they did not either have the fans on stage, gave them the mic to sing to, or came down on the dance floor to mingle; all adding to the bonding experience between fans and the band! Totaling all the factors together, it was not a hard decision to ask Blackout Betty to the LH website, making them our 55th band! Another super successful night!
3/4/17: The Sock Monkey is one of our LH Rockfest 2017 bands and we wanted the opportunity to see them before that big event, an opportunity which came tonight at The Blarney Stone Irish Pub in Orangevale. We had forgotten how amazing, tight and fun this band is! Lead vocalist Chris Farnum has a great voice and always adds that extra touch of emotion to the songs he sings. The whole band was spot-on with their delivery of the songs everyone enjoyed hearing! The Blarney was buzzing with all The Sock Monkey fans who knew their time tonight was guaranteed fun. The band even did a long encore to satisfy the chants and cheers from the many fans still there late at night! Any chance you get to see The Sock Monkey, don’t hesitate – just do it!
3/10/17: One of our favorite tribute bands, Heartless – A Tribute to Heart, was scheduled at one of our favorite venues, Opera House Saloon in Roseville. In fact, this was their first appearance at the saloon! And to top it off, it was keyboardist Brett Minkin’s 50th birthday celebration – oh what a fun night! Afterglow started off the festivities; a fun soul-dance cover band from the Bay area. We were impressed with the sound Afterglow produced. Every band member had songs to sing; their lead guitarist, Melne Murphy, really knew her way around the strings; and the lead vocalist, Arlette Lee, has a cool, clear and crisp voice! We were diggin’ this fantastic start to the evening!
3/10/17 Cont’d: Heartless rocked the house starting with their awesome Heart songs and finishing with some Led Zeppelin greats! Lead vocalist Linda Boudreau is so accurate with her vocals; you’d swear you’re at a Heart concert! And tonight was our first chance to support percussionist Kevin Seymour (formally of Riff Raff) in Heartless! Kevin brought his usual high energy and charm to the stage, adding such a great incorporation to the team. Linda told me they all felt blessed to welcome Kevin aboard, and I know Kevin feels the same in return. A better night could not be had in the Roseville area – LH is proud!
3/11/17: A special birthday celebration was taking place at The Elk Grove Sports Bar & Grill this lovely evening, and as luck-be-a-lady, The Dutchess Wilder Band was performing. It’s been some time since we got a chance to listen to the blues, so tonight was a special night – times two! The birthday celebration was a fun success that included a yummy dinner at The Sporty before the blues took over. We were impressed with Dutchess’ raspy, bluesy voice, not to mention what a sweet lady she is! Her band was equally impressive, adding to the perfection this night became! We made new friends tonight in this band, and that is always priceless!
3/17/17: The last time we saw Four Barrel was New Year’s Eve at Laugh’s Unlimited. My how time flies – it was definitely time to party with these good folks again! Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale was the venue for the get-together, one of our favorite stops! The venue was hopping with party folks who knew how to get down on the dance floor, while Four Barrel was getting down on the stage. Highlight of my evening was when I got to meet the owners of Jan’s Lounge – Mitch and Jeff in person! Such wonderful and friendly people! As a sad side note, I am so sorry to say that four days later Mitch passed away. This was so unexpected, and a hole is left in many a heart, including mine. Mitch will be missed terribly. I feel so blessed to have met him before he was taken too soon.
3/18/17: Our Styx tribute band – Blue Collar Men, A Tribute To Styx & The Great Rock Classics – landed a sweet gig outside the Lincoln Museum hosted by Beermann’s Brewery for the Children’s Heart Foundation. It wasn’t hard to find some of the LH team to travel with me to see this awesome band perform on a beautiful Saturday afternoon! Blue Collar Men did an amazing job on all the Styx greats. What a flash from the past to hear some of the rockin’ classics like Come Sail Away, Fooling Yourself, Lady, Lorelei, and my all-time favorite – Suite Madame Blue/America, which can be seen on LH! We had a great time; met some new fellow live music lovers, chatted with some old friends, soaked up some sun, and re-connected with the band. Life is good!
3/18/17: Our goal is to fit in all the LH Rockfest 2017 bands before the event as a way of thanking them for their participation in Rockfest. Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights hosted The Mach 5, which permitted us to lock down our schedule with this fine band! We found The Sock Monkey’s bassist, Thomas Bridgham, filling in for The Mach 5’s new bassist, Rod Simpkins, who is nursing a hurt hand. Thomas really stepped up to the plate with a superb performance that rendered a lot of shenanigans, such as the picture below, delighting the fans on the floor and allowing the entire team to let loose the fun! We always enjoy the work of The Mach 5, and tonight lived up to that enjoyment. Another successful weekend of live music tucked securely away in the memory books!
3/24/17: Cante Ah Vino Winery in Rocklin has recently become a live music venue, opening up a new opportunity for LH to grab an early gig with a band since the winery hosts music from 7-9 PM on weekends. Tonight our very own Merry Mac had the honor of performing for a room full of wine and music lovers! We met a bunch of new friends that liked to dance and listen to good tunes done well by Merry Mac. The dance floor was pretty much anywhere we could find a place to dance, which we did just that! We have always admired lead vocalist Shaina Kennedy’s voice, so it was great to re-connect with her again this evening. We look forward to partying with Merry Mac often when they grace Cante Ah Vino Winery’s stage!
3/24/17: Time to head to the Opera House Saloon in Roseville and check out the newest addition to the Superlicious team, lead guitarist Andy Gomez! We have known Andy from Departure, Moonshine Crazy, Branded, Endangered Souls, and Dust & Diesel. Andy is such a talented and blessed guitarist, if you remember my interview with him at Swabbies awhile back, he actually sees colors when he gets in the zone! Andy delivered in a big way at tonight’s gig, adding a versatile dimension to this already talented team! And to top it off, the Opera House Saloon was full of 80’s music fans who adore Superlicious! With a crowd like this and a super-fun band like Superlicious, how could the night be anything be stellar!
3/25/17: Tonight was a very special night at Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale. It had only been four days since the passing of one of the owners of Jan’s Lounge, Mitch Putnam. On The Fly paid tribute to our friend Mitch by rockin’ down the house. So many of our rocker friends showed up to spread the love. On The Fly brought Craig Boom and Tony Borges (formally of Set In Stone) up on stage for a full set, and Kevin Seymour (Heartless) for a fun rock song. Lead vocalist Angelo Dapello even re-named the band ‘Set On The Fly Stone’ for the evening! Very clever, Angelo! The second set turned back into the On The Fly team, with their new guitarist, Dante Mutti, joining them to finish out the night! Good friend Terri Jensen brought some fly swatters to pass around to “fan” the band on with appreciation! We had double rock on the agenda this fine evening, and after the first set we headed out, without first feeling a wave of gratitude, appreciation and love for every soul in the place. In honor of Mitch Putnam, you will be missed. Much love, Mitch.
3/25/17: Another debut for one of our bands, this time at The Corner Pocket Sports Bar in Citrus Heights with Unlicensed Therapy! We arrived later in the evening after partying for a bit with On The Fly, but the band was still rockin’ full force with a ton of fans milling around. We got to hear some of our favorite Unlicensed Therapy songs done well with Dana Caylor’s beautiful and strong vocals leading the way. We had so much fun, we stayed until load out chatting with any band member that would stop long enough to get in on the conversation. Another very successful night to add to the memory books!
3/31/17: Last dance chance for the month happened at The Sporty in Elk Grove with our recent addition, FM80! The LH team seemed ready for some rock-N-roll and hit the dance floor with force. The band responded with great vibes – rockin’ their tunes all evening long! Lead vocalist, Daniel Getz, worked the room on many a song, letting fans sing along in the mic. Tonight felt like an exclusive party with your best peeps and great music in a fun surrounding! Thank you, FM80, for hosting such a great party! Stellar way to end the month!
March marks the end of the first quarter of this fine year! My, how time does fly by when you’re out rockin’ the nights away! We are so thankful for all of you who came out to the many live music shows around town and supported these fine musicians! Let’s do it again in April!
And remember – LH Rockfest is April 22nd – the Superbowl of live music for the Sacramento area! See ya next month!
Until then, truly ROCK ON! \m/
