Thank you again for supporting LH, as we support this awesome group of talented folks!
Let’s take a trip back in May to see how live music turned us on:
5/2/14: First stop of the month – The Country Club Saloon in Loomis with The Mock Ups! As one of LH’s fun-loving bands, we always enjoy a trip back in musical time with this team! They rock the 70’s and 80’s tunes and keep the fans laughing and dancing! The place was packed and stayed so until we left, shortly after midnight. A group of LH fans showed up with two birthday gals who were diggin’ the attention, including cake and Tiara’s! I got a great Tickles video that includes one of the gals helping to gain interest in The Mock Ups T-shirts!
5/3/14: Double rock night! First stop Strikes Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin to party with our good friends, Playback! It’s been awhile since we’ve seen this awesome band, and they were rockin’ the good times! There were a few changes to the team – Victor had other commits and dropped out of Playback, and Gordon Groft is the new keyboardist! Gordon also interjects the Harmonica on certain songs, giving Playback more options to entertain and delight! We were lovin’ the new look and sound!
One set in and time to fly to Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights to see A-Train! A-Train rocked the night with their spot-on performance, making for a great get-away from the daily grind! The place was filling up with live music fans as word is getting around that Referee’s is hosting some pretty awesome bands! The plan is to spread the word about LH to these awesome folks so they can check on who’s playing where and come out often to support Referee’s and their favorite bands! I am looking forward to getting to know the “Referee regulars” and calling them friends! Speaking of which, we did run into our sweet friends, Steve and Suzanne! Love you guys!!!
5/9/14: One of my closest and dearest friends, Teri Alison of Unlicensed Therapy, was playing at The Country Club Saloon in Loomis and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my birthday weekend than with her and her band! She had a special Tiara for me to wear and lots of our mutual friends showed up to party, as well as my other close and dear friend, Shelley! Teri brought me up on stage to talk about LH and wish me Happy Birthday! Teri got caught up in a push-up competition out back on break with a live music fan, and she won! But I’m not surprised as Teri is in super shape! I posted that video on 5/21/14 under Tickles, Tidbits And Trivia! I also got a great gig story out of guitarist Scott Renton! It was a perfect night!
5/10/14: Swabbies On The River was hosting a huge live music day with special guests Cats Barking, Maiden California, Riff Raff and Skid Roses! Mike Barnes of True Line Entertainment was kept busy by providing the awesome sound and lighting for the whole day, not to mention his job of singing with Riff Raff!
Swabbies had two stages running, and Cats Barking not only got to play their set on one of the stages, but also in between the other shows while the next band set up on the main stage! Darryl, Lance and Bob held up their end of the entertainment bargain with some rockin’ great tunes! And check out the Recent Hangouts video of the fans dancing on the walkway behind the band, since there was limited space in front! Now that’s a true show of support!
Maiden California, an Iron Maiden tribute band, was up next. We’d never seen them before, but Zane Miller, bassist for Radio Heavy, is also the bass player in this band. The Radio Heavy team was on board with support and enjoyed Maiden California’s time on stage, as did all the fans! If you get a chance to see them, do so as they are solid in their performance!
Third up – Riff Raff. By this time the fans were out in force and primed for more rock N’ roll! And you can bet Riff Raff delivered the AC/DC rock! Swabbies was packed and it was hard to get a place on the dirt dance floor! Nevertheless, a great time was had by all!
To finish out the Swabbies evening, Skid Roses graced the stage with their usual fun flare and rock tunes! Jef Leppard, as usual, was stirring the pot with his funny antics in between a few songs. One in particular to post under Tickles, Tidbits & Trivia in June – something about a toilet – you can imagine! It was a great time at Swabbies and the Skids ended a perfect, fun event!
And since the day was done “early,” we decided to jet over to Referee’s Sports Bar & Grill in Citrus Heights to finish off the night with Unlicensed Therapy and grab more video for the Recent Hangouts section since I was too busy enjoying the birthday festivities last night to get videos! So glad we did, as a very good friend of ours and a true live music fan, Julie Perry, was celebrating HER birthday! Check out what Julie does when presented with her birthday cake! That video posted on 6/11/14 under Fan Files!
5/16/14: Orangevale was host to the Pow Wow Days again, and it was such a blast last year wild horses couldn’t keep us away this year, especially when we heard Riff Raff was performing! It was a perfect evening – weather, friends, fans, music, food. Riff Raff had a special guest drummer, Steve Quartarola, sitting in for vacationing Kevin. Steve rocked the stage with a commanding performance! The evening went fast, as we are used to rockin’ out twice as long as Riff Raff was allowed to play. I’d like to give a shout out to Mr. Soundman, Mark Ellenburg, for the great sound and lighting enhancements that helped make this a concert to remember! Thanks, Mark, you ROCK!!!
5/23/14: Tonight we jetted off to The Country Club Saloon in Loomis to party with our good friends of Red Radio. It had been way too long! To our wonderful surprise, they were gigging outside! What a beautiful night for it – the entire inside crowd soon became the entire outside crowd when the music started! We ran into Alicia Lowe, lead vocalist of The Ripoffs; John Reed, keyboardist for 8 Track Massacre; and Scott Renton and John Butterfield of Unlicensed Therapy! Alicia even sang backup for a special song, which will air in July under Random Riffs! We got a chance to check out the new drummer, Dave Naiditch, who was spectacular! His Drum Off aired 6/11/14! And I got a great interview with lead guitarist Roberto Reyes that practically went viral in Roberto’s home state of Chile when I posted it on Facebook! I managed to get a very funny gig story out of Jeff Grenz that happened to also be about Roberto and aired on 6/11/14. All in all, it was a very successful LH night!
5/24/14: We are always excited to try a new venue and tonight was Bar 101’s turn to see Radio Heavy. Bar 101 is right across the street from The Opera House Saloon in Roseville! We found the venue to be cozy with a good feel to it! The staff was great, and the restrooms were clean with all the fancy new modern gadgets that work without touching them – impressive! I’ll have to say, Radio Heavy was on top of their game – one of the best jobs I’ve ever seen them do! The whole band was super friendly and happy to see us, and it was Matt Lipford’s birthday celebration! Lead vocalist, Veronica, was incredible! I could listen to her sing for hours! I was honored to capture an interview with her so you can get to know her a little better. She is a fantastic lady! On a later break, I cornered Matt and filmed his perception of the Blooper I was lucky to catch at Swabbies last summer when his Floor Tom fell over! It was priceless – both the Blooper and the interview! You can see Matt’s interview on 6/18/14! This is shaping up to be a perfect weekend!
5/25/14: Next up on the ‘Schedule Of Fun’ is the Sacramento Music Festival, as two of my bands were scheduled at Laugh’s Unlimited in Old Sacramento during the Festival! The Tone Monkeys went first, and they had the audience mesmerized with their abilities! Lots of folks showed up for this show and most were at least toe-tapping if not full out dancing in the isles! It was great fun, but short (½ hour) compared to what we’re used to!
A little while later Stone Kold was ready to start their party! Another ½ hour show, but so worth the wait! It had been quite some time since we have seen Stone Kold and hugs were definitely in order! They have two new band mates – Paul Rutherford on guitar, and Steve Venegas on drums! Both were awesome additions to the band! Seeing Stone Kold again made me realize how much I had missed them. I won’t let grass grow under the window of opportunity to see them again soon!
Afterwards, we had a chance to walk around to check out some of the other talented bands, but couldn’t help but feel our bands were the best around!
5/26/14: Memorial Day! You know what that means – Swabbies On The River with Four Barrel! What better combo and way to spend such an awesome day of remembrance! The weather was perfect, the band in the zone, the fans kicking back with smiling faces – life is good. Our good friends Linda and Al asked Four Barrel to be the band at their wedding next March and Four Barrel accepted! Life is now ever better! We met up with Teri Alison and Scott Renton, both of Unlicensed Therapy, who helped get folks out on the dance floor; as well as our good friend Barbara and her awesome 4-year old son, Jaxon! Jaxon is one to watch – he’s going to be a star in a rock N’ roll band someday! What a perfect way to end a rockin’ great weekend!
5/30/14: It’s been so long since we’ve been to Jan’s Lounge in Orangevale, we were starting to miss the regular fans that hang out there! A-Train was gracing their stage this evening and what a blast we had! The evening started with a fun chat with band members, and I even sat down with bassist Barry Del Carlo to get to know him a bit. I will be coming after Barry for an interview next time I see them to share with you all the fun facts I learned from him! On with the evening … A-Train was hot, hot, hot with great tunes done well! The Recent Hangouts video I posted from this evening was ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and was full of fun! Lead guitarist Adam Paul actually un-tuned and re-tuned his guitar during the song to mimic the sound of a train coming round the bend! A must see if you haven’t yet!
5/31/14: Marathon day – triple rock call to action! First up Swabbies On The River to see Long Time, our Boston tribute band, and a few songs of Blue Collar Men, a Styx Tribute band! It was very warm out but Long Time didn’t miss a step of energy or beat of a song! They rocked the place, as evidence of fans young and old out on the floor! The finale was their signature song, Foreplay/Long Time, one of our favorites! At the end they added a touching tribute to all the American men and women who protect our freedom and serve to keep us safe. There were so many peace signs – it was very touching.
Next up Blue Collar Men! This is a great Styx Tribute band – we were very impressed! We could only stay for a couple of songs in order to get to the third band, but the few we heard were spot on! Check out ‘Too Much Time On My Hands’ to post under Random Riffs From The Attic on 6/25/14! I would like to add this band to the LH family, and hope to find the time in the near future to connect up with the lead and finalize some details!
Last stop of triple rock is Strikes Halftime Bar & Grill in Rocklin to see Left Of Centre! The boys are back in town and you know LH will always be there to party down! We walked in a little late (Swabbies’ fault) and no one was on the dance floor, so we proceeded to the floor to do our thing, which started a trail of faithful followers who just needed someone to start the dance, and the floor never emptied the rest of the night! I got to chat with the team during break and asked percussionist Daren McCabe what song he wants as a Drum Off, to which he replied …well, you’ll just have to check it out on 6/25/14! Lead vocalist, Frank Garrett, produced an awesome ‘Tickles’ moment – you’ll have to check that one out on 7/2/14 – it’s worth the wait! Another super great day of rock N’ roll to grace the pages of the Memory Book!
That brings to close the busy month of May. June will be another busy month of outdoor music, concerts in parks, and festivals. Make plans now to free up your weekend calendar and join us in supporting our local musicians!
Till then, ROCK ON! \m/
